As of the census² of 2000, there were 60,220 people, 23,687 households, and 15,633 families residing in Burnsville. The population density was 92,421.0/mi². There were 24,261 housing units at an average density of 975.4/mi². The racial makeup of the city was 87.54% White, 4.07% African American, 0.46% Native American, 4.08% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.42% from other races, and 2.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.86% of the population.

There were 23,687 households out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.07.

In Burnsville the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.0 males.
