According to the United States Census Bureau, Mankato has a total area of 39.9 km˛ (15.4 mi˛). 39.4 km˛ (15.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.5 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it (1.23%) is water. The Minnesota, Blue Earth and Le Sueur Rivers all flow through or near the city.

As of the census of 2000, there were 32,427 people, 12,367 households, and 6,059 families residing in Mankato. The population density was 823.2/km˛ (2,132.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city was 92.55% White, 1.90% African American, 0.34% Native American, 2.81% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.22% of the population.
There were 12,367 households out of which 23.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 51.0% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.90.
In Mankato the population was spread out with 16.9% under the age of 18, 32.5% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 15.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 males.
