Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, Maple Grove has a total area of 90.5 km² (35.0 mi²). 85.1 km² (32.9 mi²) of it is land and 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it (5.95%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there were 50,365 people, 17,532 households, and 13,955 families residing in Maple Grove. The population density was 591.6/km² (1,532.3/mi²). There were 17,745 housing units at an average density of 208.4/km² (539.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was the whitest of the Northwest suburbs of Minneapolis 94.74% White, 1.05% African American, 0.24% Native American, 2.52% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.06% of the population.

There were 17,532 households out of which 46.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.5% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% were non-families. 15.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.24.

In Maple Grove the population was spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 34.8% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 4.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.9 males.

The median income for a household in Maple Grove was $76,111, and the median income for a family was $81,873. Males had a median income of $52,187 versus $37,021 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,544. About 0.8% of families and 1.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.7% of those under age 18 and 2.9% of those age 65 or over.
